Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace

This course is recommended for employees with little or no prior knowledge on health and safety issues which they will encounter during their working day and who require a nationally recognised certificate.

The course has been designed as a first level entry incorporating fundamental occupational health and safety knowledge for all employees that will enable them to contribute to any health and safety management system.

It can be tailored to individual and business needs to make the overall learning experience relevant and fit for purpose.

The qualification covers the following subjects:

  • Legislation
  • Health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • The workplace environment and workplace equipment
  • Safety – accident prevention, slip, trips and falls, electricity, fire prevention
  • Risk assessment
  • Manual handling
  • Hazardous substances
  • Working at heights
  • Ergonomics and workstation design
  • Transport and vehicles
  • Noise and vibration

Whether attending the HABC standard course or one tailored specifically for individual business needs the course objectives remain the same: To ensure all candidates understand:

  • The principles of accident prevention and how to contribute to improving health and safety within their organisation
  • How to identify and report key health and safety problems in their workplace
  • That risk assessment is an important technique for accident prevention
  • The risks associated with manual handling
  • The risks associated with hazardous substances
  • How workplace equipment and task design affect health and safety
  • The potential long and short-term effects of exposure to noise and vibration
  • Awarding Body: HABC
  • Course Duration: 1 day
  • Assessment: 1 hour, 30 question, multiple choice exam at the end of the course (+20 correct answers to achieve a pass)

Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace

Level 3 Award in Supervising Health & Safety in the Workplace

This course is recommended for supervisors, managers, business owners or other employees responsible for implementing the health and safety management system in their business.

Accidents and illness can result in disability, death or incapacity for work.  This qualification will enable managers and supervisors to improve the health and safety culture of their organisation, whatever its size or activity by:

  • Playing an active part in monitoring health and safety practices
  • Taking an active part in some training activities, especially on job training
  • Supervising workers effectively in general aspects of health and safety
  • Identifying the need for risk assessment and participate in the process
  • Encouraging safe practices
  • Assisting in the formulation of health and safety policies and procedures

The qualification covers the following subjects:

  • Concept of health and safety
  • Accidents in the workplace
  • Ill health in the workplace
  • Legal provisions
  • Health and safety organisation and management
  • Supervising health and safety

Following completion of this course, candidates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main concepts of health and safety
  • Show awareness of the benefits of health and safety culture
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of individuals, supervisors, and management in health & safety
  • Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety control and improvement strategies available to supervisors
  • Awarding Body: CIEH or HABC
  • Course Duration: 3 days
  • Assessment: 2 hour, 60 question, multiple choice exam at the end of the course (+40 pass, +50 credit)
  • OFQUAL Accredited: Yes
  • Prerequisite: CIEH Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace or equivalent is desired
