At the helm of Anderson Food Hygiene is Sylvia Anderson well-known Food Hygiene Expert.
Sylvia’s drive and passion about Food Hygiene and Health & Safety, her background, knowledge and experience gained from 30 years within the Hospitality Industry have led to her being the key lead advisor for this legislated subject regularly across social media; standard broadcasting (Radio; Press and TV coverage) and PR opportunities.
Sylvia started working in the hospitality industry at the age of 15 working behind the scenes both back and front of house. Sylvia originally started as a Commis Chef working up to Head Chef over the years in between studying at College and University and also to gain Front of House experience as a Busser, Waitress, Bartender, Door Host and then into Restaurant Management.
Qualification wise Sylvia started with qualifying as a chef with her City & Guilds, then went on to achieve a HND in Hospitality Management, BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management, CIEH Level 4 in Managing Food Safety in Catering and a RSPH in Level 4 in Health & Safety Management, a Post Graduate Degree in Health and Safety Management and a Post Graduate Degree in CIPD – Certificate in Personnel Development.
Her early career spanned many high profile internationally renowned companies including, The Grosvenor House Hotel, Marriott Hotels, P & O Cruise Liners, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Euro Disney Paris, Haagen Dazs, TGI Fridays UK, Taj Resorts & Hotels, Crowne Plaza Hotels, GlaxoSmithKline, LSG Sky Chefs. Additionally, Sylvia has catered for special events throughout the UK including Buckingham Palace, Royal Ascot, Kempton Park, Sandown Race Course and Henley Regatta.
The work experience Sylvia gained from these amazing Companies led her to a high-profile role in HR in Training & Development and Recruitment including Food Safety and Health & Safety Training, Auditing and Consultancy. Sylvia’s vibrant personality and ability to communicate at all levels within a Corporate environment led her neatly into the role of educator. With her experience in the hospitality industry and her passion for food hygiene, it was inevitable that her role as an educator would lead to her own training company as Managing Director of Anderson Food Hygiene.
Now a multi-award winning entrepreneur, Sylvia continues to push her own boundaries moving from purely training into a more consultancy role has led to Sylvia being in some rather risky situations with some high-profile hospitality businesses really not very happy about her reporting on them.
Most recently, Sylvia has been seconded to BBC Watchdog as their Food Hygiene Consultant. Sylvia has worked initially on the first new programme which will be aired on BBC1 in July 2017. This initial programme was all about the safety of the public from harmful bacteria whilst using public spaces/transport etc. This initial programme followed a 3-month investigatory process where Sylvia was the sole advisor on different types of bacteria found in different public places which may pose a risk to the public.
The BBC were specifically looking for an ‘exposé type’ programme and it required Sylvia to be up to speed in all the latest laboratory testing and analysis for the growth of harmful bacteria.
In 2008 Sylvia was invited to be the Food Hygiene Expert on a television programme with ITV called ‘Dishing the Dirt’. Sylvia went undercover in the Dominican Republic investigating a thousand affected hotel guests suffering from Salmonella, E-coli, Campylobacter, and Shigella.
Following Sylvia’s investigation, Thomas Cook and First Choice were taken to court and fined over £5 million pounds due the fact that they didn’t put UK families’ safety first and were still sending families on holiday to the region that had been struck with this terrible food poisoning.
This role catapulted Sylvia into the public eye and many more media opportunities began to flood in. Sylvia worked with Channel 4 next on a programme about the Peoples Supermarket as a Food Safety Consultant for their celebrity chef Arthur Potts-Dawson.
This was a fantastic opportunity for Sylvia and actually promoted a message that Sylvia truly believed in.
When a change in legislation is introduced and it is newsworthy or new trends like ‘supper clubs’ take hold, it is Sylvia who gives the Expert view.
BBC London Radio interviewed her in relation to London’s poor Food Hygiene Rating for food businesses with over 8,000 restaurants located in London have 2 Star rating or below. Sylvia provided advice and guidance on how restaurants can quickly improve their score to obtain the 5-star rating.
Since 2014, Sylvia has been the Food Hygiene Expert for Guardian Masterclasses – working alongside famous chefs like MasterChef finalist Tony Rodd and writer and regular supper club host Uyen Luu.
“Sylvia has been involved in several masterclasses and is a valued part of our team of tutors. We rely on her Food Hygiene Expertise to add gravitas and impart her knowledge as part of our food-related masterclasses. Sylvia has spoken about The Importance of Food Safety as part of our training programme since 2014. Later in 2015 Sylvia supported our How to Start a Supper Club, Home Restaurant, or Pop-Up” Masterclass Alongside MasterChef finalist Tony Rodd and writer and regular supper club host Uyen Luu which was a phenomenal success.
